"U-Packers" and "I-Packers" are types of shims or spacers predominantly used in the installation of windows, doors, and other structural components. They are small, precision-moulded accessories, typically made from durable, non-corrosive plastic (like polypropylene or high-density polyethylene), often color-coded by thickness for easy identification.
U-Packers (U-Shaped Packers)
U-Packers are named for their distinct U-shaped profile (often referred to as Horseshoe Packers).
Design and Content: They are moulded plastic shims with an open gap or slot in the center. They are available in various thicknesses (e.g., 1mm to 6mm) and widths (e.g., 24mm to 32mm).
Primary Function: Their U-shape is specifically designed to allow the packer to be clipped around a fixed component, such as a screw, bolt, window frame lip, or mounting bracket, without needing to remove the fastener.
Applications:
Glazing: Used to toe and heel (or block) the glass unit within the frame. The packer maintains the critical gap between the glass edge and the frame and helps distribute the glass unit's weight to prevent frame distortion or sagging.
Frame Installation: Used to align window and door frames within the rough opening, ensuring the frame is plumb and square, even around fixing points.
I-Packers (Flat/Solid Packers)
"I-Packers" are typically the generic term for flat, solid rectangular or square packers (also known as Flat Glazing Packers).
Design and Content: They are solid, flat, rectangular shims with no central opening. Like U-Packers, they come in a range of color-coded thicknesses and widths.
Primary Function: They provide maximum, uniform support across a surface area. Since they are solid, they offer optimal stability and can typically handle heavier loads or provide full support across a flat surface.
Applications:
Leveling and Spacing: Used under large pre-cast concrete sections, to level floors or tiling, or to create a consistent gap beneath door thresholds and window sills.
Structural Shimming: Used for general construction purposes to provide a consistent packing layer for stability and alignment of non-fixed components.
Glazing (Secondary Use): They are used as initial spacers and for load distribution in areas of the frame where clipping around a fastener is not necessary.
Both U-Packers and I-Packers are essential in precision installation work. They ensure that components are correctly aligned, the load is evenly distributed, and stress points on materials like glass and frame welds are avoided, thereby maximizing the longevity and performance of the installed product.
