While the mesh fabric itself is the visible barrier against insects, the thread or cord is arguably the most critical component for the functionality and smooth operation of a pleated screen system. Often referred to as tension cord or polyester cord, this material is what controls the folding mechanism, maintains the screen's tension, and ensures effortless gliding. The quality of this cord is paramount to the screen's longevity and daily usability.
Material and Construction of the Cord
The threads used in high-quality pleated mesh systems are carefully selected to withstand constant use, tension, and exposure to the elements.
Primary Material: Polyester
The vast majority of cords used in pleated screens are made from 100% Polyester yarn. This synthetic material is chosen for several key characteristics:
High Tensile Strength: Polyester threads are engineered for high tenacity, meaning they have superior resistance to breaking or snapping under the continuous stress of the screen's movement and tensioning system.
UV and Weather Resistance: Screens are exposed to sunlight, heat, and moisture. Polyester naturally resists UV degradation and is less prone to damage from moisture and weathering compared to natural fibers.
Dimensional Stability: The thread must maintain its original length and diameter under tension. High-quality polyester exhibits low elongation and minimal shrinkage, preventing the mesh from sagging or becoming too loose over time.
Wear Resistance: As the cord slides through the frame's channels and the mesh pleats, it must resist friction. Polyester offers excellent abrasion resistance to ensure a long working life.
Filament Core: Many superior cords feature a filament core for enhanced strength, often covered by soft fibers to ensure a smooth, noise-free operation within the frame's channels.
Tensioning and Pleat Control
The cord is woven through the folds of the mesh, running from the pull bar to the sides of the frame. It performs two crucial functions:
Guiding the Movement: The cord acts as a track guide, pulling the mesh taut and ensuring that the pleats fold and stack uniformly into the side profile when the screen is opened.
Maintaining Stability (Anti-Blowout): The tension created by the cord keeps the mesh firm and prevents it from "blowing out" of the frame or sagging under wind pressure or slight impacts. This cord tensioning system is fundamental to the screen's ease of operation—allowing it to be opened and closed with a light touch and remain securely fixed at any position along the track.
