Pleated mesh systems, commonly used for retractable insect screens on windows, doors, and balconies, are comprised of several key components working together to provide a stylish, space-saving, and effective barrier against insects while allowing air circulation.
The Mesh Itself
The primary component is the pleated mesh fabric, which folds neatly like an accordion when retracted.
Material: The mesh is typically made from highly durable, fine-weave synthetic materials designed to withstand outdoor elements and frequent use.
Polyester (PP – Polyester Pleated): The most common choice, known for its durability, flexibility, and resistance to tearing.
Fiberglass: Also widely used, offering a slightly more rigid structure and good UV and weather resistance.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): Used in some specialized mesh options.
Design: The mesh is folded in a zig-zag pattern (pleats), which allows it to collapse into a very compact stack when the screen is opened, preserving the view and maximizing space.
Function: It is designed to allow maximum ventilation and natural light while effectively blocking mosquitoes, flies, and other small insects and debris.
The Frame and Housing
The structure that holds and guides the mesh is typically made from robust, lightweight materials.
Frame Material: Aluminium (Aluminum 6063 Alloy) is the most popular choice for the frames, including the top, bottom, and side sections.
Finish: The aluminum is often finished with Epoxy Coating or powder-coated in various colors (like black, brown, white, or grey) to match the aesthetics of the existing window or door frame.
Bottom Track/Rail: This is the rail the screen slides along. Many modern designs feature a low-profile or trackless bottom rail to prevent tripping hazards, making them ideal for homes with children, the elderly, or wheelchair users.
Cassette/Housing: This is the compact section where the mesh neatly folds and retracts when the screen is open, protecting it from damage and keeping it discreet.
Operating Mechanism and Accessories
The smooth, effortless operation of the pleated mesh relies on several smaller, high-performance components.
Cords/Strings: A set of polyester or other high-tensile strong threads or cords are threaded through the pleats of the mesh. These cords guide the mesh and maintain the tension of the folds as the screen is opened and closed.
Plastic Components: Virgin HD Plastic or Nylon 66 components are used for parts that require smooth movement and durability, such as:
Corner Guards/Joints: To securely join the frame sections.
Screw Adjusters and Plugs: For installation and maintenance purposes.
Wheels/Rollers: In some designs, especially those with bottom or top tracks, for smooth sliding.
Handles: Aluminium coated handles or pull-bars are used to easily grip and slide the screen open or closed.
Locking System: Mechanisms like an inside rail hook or magnetic locking system secure the screen in the closed position, ensuring a complete insect barrier.
